Michael C

Online Maths Tutor

I have been a teacher and a tutor for more than 20 years. I have taught students of all abilities, from the ones who struggle with Maths, to those who are Oxbridge candidates. My real strengths lie in developing confidence in students. I have a deep passion for Maths but have never found it to be especially easy, therefore I can empathise with students who find Maths difficult. I can motivate and enthuse students who don’t like Maths, especially those who are struggling with retakes.
My background is in Science. I have a degree and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Liverpool in the UK.
During my 17 years of classroom teaching, I gained a wide range of experiences and techniques for motivating students. I taught mainly Science, but I did also teach ICT and Maths. As a physical scientist, Maths has always been important in both my work and my teaching.
I have now been working, full time, as a private tutor for the past 3 years. During this time, I have worked with:-

  1. Small groups and 1 to 1.
  2. Students online and face to face.
  3. Students all around the UK and in China.
As a freelance tutor, I also work for a charity called Stand Against Violence (https://standagainstviolence.co.uk/). This role involves delivering assemblies and teaching class groups on the theme of violence and its consequences.

I have had breaks from teaching during my career. In those times, I have worked as a web developer and eLearning developer. This has given me valuable insights into the world of work outside of education and shown me how important Maths literacy is in all walks of life.

Outside of work I am a keen Grandparent, who is missing my grandchildren during lockdown. I am lucky enough to live in rural Devon and so enjoy cycling the country lanes around here.

In summary, I am an enthusiastic tutor who enjoys working with students. My aim is to enthuse and motivate, whilst trying to build confidence and hopefully have fun.
